Faith Not Fear

With the coming of COVID-19, every person’s world has changed in some way. In early March, we at the Samaritan Community Center saw that COVID-19 would eventually affect NWA. Some nonprofits temporarily closed and their employees were sent to work from home. As this created an even greater need for basic services for struggling families, we contemplated what we should do. I was reminded of one of my favorite Scriptures…

Isaiah 43 GNT
Israel, the Lord who created you says,
“Do not be afraid—I will save you.
I have called you by name—you are mine.
When you pass through deep waters, I will be with you;
your troubles will not overwhelm you.
When you pass through fire, you will not be burned;
the hard trials that come will not hurt you.
For I am the Lord your God,
the holy God of Israel, who saves you.
I will give up Egypt to set you free;
I will give up Ethiopia[a] and Seba.
I will give up whole nations to save your life,
because you are precious to me
and because I love you and give you honor.
Do not be afraid—I am with you!

Our team prayed and truly felt God was calling us to step out in faith and take a lead role in serving a hurting (and frightened) NWA community. We converted our programs to a drive-thru operation (literally overnight!) and began providing meals, snackpacks, and groceries curbside to thousands of people each week. Over 30% of those we have served have never sought assistance from us before but now struggle with unemployment, potential homelessness, and a greater need for food. The sheer relief (and joy!) on their faces as we help to meet their most basic physical needs has been such a beautiful thing to experience!

And God has definitely provided for us. Whether it be the donation of specialized baby formula given to a desperate mother with a premature baby or the receipt of two large grants (within days of temporarily closing our two thrift stores) to use for purchasing food for our ever increasing number of clients, God is right here.

While we may not know what the future holds with COVID-19, we do know that God is with us on this faith journey. And, we will walk forward in faith, not hold ourselves back in fear.
